Fun for Kids: Bunnytown

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

New to Disney’s Playhouse this November is a comedy featuring bunny puppets and 3 human characters called Bunnytown. The aim of the show is to get preschool children to laugh out loud. According to Adam Rudman, one of the show’s creators, “It’s non-stop action. It’s almost like you get to visit this place for the day and go all over the town. There are these crazy, silly bunnies — space bunnies, super bunnies, pirate bunnies. It really has unlimited potential.”

New Rabbit Float to Appear in Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

A new float will dazzle spectators tomorrow morning at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The float will take the form of a 53-foot silver rabbit. It will appear in the “Blue Sky Gallery” which features other balloons fashioned from art. Below is a model of the new float.

The float is based on a 1986 stainless steel sculpture called “Rabbit” by acclaimed artist Jeff Koons. The original sculpture was a commentary on holiday consumerism- in particular, Easter. Koons played with perceptions of value by transforming a flimsy, cheap looking balloon bunny into a solid work of art admired by many in art museums. According the artist, the piece is about reflection. “It reflects the needs of culture and society and can represent so many different things to the viewer.”

Best in Show for Bunnies

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

This video has been around for a little while now, but it still cracks me up. The man’s jubilant “YESSS!” accompanied by the double fist pump when his rabbit jumps over the hurdle is hilarious. But, apparently this was the winning high jump of 33.5 inches in the 2002 Danish Championship.

Obesity on the Rise for British Bunnies

Monday, November 19th, 2007

According to a new survey conducted by veterinarians in Britain, 1 in 3 pet rabbits are obese. Sources of the problem include feeding bunnies sugary foods like toast with honey, carrots, and rich processed rabbit pellets.

On the plus side, the survey found an increasing number of pet rabbits living as house pets as opposed to living in an outdoor hutch.

Well, my knitting expertise pretty much extends to scarves and hats, but I think this bunny knitting pattern from fuzzymitten on Etsy.com would be fun to try:

Training (Take 1)

Monday, November 19th, 2007

I quickly learned that putting the treats in the same cabinet as the paper towels used for litterbox cleaning was not a good idea. Now, every time Cosette hears the cabinet door opening, she bounds over with a crazed look in her eye. And since Cosette is excited, Coco will come running over so that he doesn’t miss out. (Even though he has no idea what’s going on.) So after I cleaned their litterboxes last night, I decided that I didn’t have the heart to withhold a treat from them since they were so excited. However, I thought that maybe I could at least make them work for it and learn some tricks.

So, I thought I’d teach them the command, “Up!” I didn’t think it would be that difficult since they enjoy jumping onto tables, boxes, beds, chairs, shelves, etc. And they usually come over if I tap my finger on the ground (only to leave immediately if they see I don’t have food.)

So, I said, “Up!” and tapped the top of the box. After about fifteen minutes of this and Cosette running around and inside the box frantically with Coco chasing her, I settled for the command, “Walk!” which entailed me holding the treat in front of them so they had to stand on their hind feet and walk. Not quite as impressive as I would have hoped…

Especially when compared to these clicker trained bunnies:

It makes me want to buy a clicker, but on the other hand, I kind of find Cosette’s sometimes surly attitude endearing.
