Rabbit Awareness Week 2010

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Rabbit Awareness Week (RAW) commences April 26 this year in the UK.  Veterinarians, rescues, and food suppliers will come together to promote good rabbit health and well-being.   The focus of this year’s event is obesity in rabbits, a condition which can impede their mobility, cleanliness, digestive health, and more.

According to the RAW press release,

Participating veterinary practices will hold free rabbit check-ups during RAW to help educate and promote good general health (including vaccinations, husbandry, diet, etc) and in support, some of the largest retailers and suppliers of rabbit food will be providing valuable feeding knowledge and information, along with a great range of deals and offers to pet owners.

This year’s RAW is bigger and better than previously celebrated:  In association with Burgess Pet Care, Pet Plan Insurance, Intervet, Company of Animals, RWAF, Wood Green Animal Shelters and the PDSA, rabbit welfare can be promoted on a larger scale and reach a wider audience of rabbit owners.

So if you live in the UK and own a rabbit or are thinking of adopting one, this is the perfect opportunity to learn the best way to keep your bunny happy and healthy.

Bunny Chiropractor

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

A chiropractor in San Marcos, CA has broadened his practice by becoming certified in veterinary orthopedic manipulation. Dr. John Harrison is now able to perform treatment to correct muscle- spinal conditions in animals.  Harrison practices on cats, dogs and rabbits.

Harrison uses instruments to apply an impulse to a joint to restore fluidity to its movement. Each session costs 50 dollars and it generally takes three to five treatments for results to show.

Among Harrison’s clients are rabbits from the San Diego House Rabbit Society. He treats spondylosis, head tilt, and various gastrointestinal issues. He compares the problems of large rabbits to those of dogs, including hip and spine issues.

Tribute to a Therapy Rabbit

Benjamin the therapy rabbitThe Des Moine Register recently published a piece about a therapy rabbit named Benjamin who helped many people at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.  He died earlier this month at age 10.

Here’s an excerpt from the article:

Ann Bernabe lives in the same apartment building as Toombs. She has a story about Benjamin the Bunny: Bernabe’s grandson was admitted to the hospital several years ago with meningitis. His right side was paralyzed. Anderson brought her rabbit into the boy’s room, day after day after day, and placed Benjamin on the boy’s left side. The boy was told he was allowed to pet Benjamin only with his right arm.

Little by little, the boy started using his right side again.

Rabbit in window

Students at Fremont Middle School in Fremont, Nebraska were surprised by an interesting view when they entered their social studies classroom.  A wild rabbit had created a burrow in the snow right next to the window.
