A captive 4-month old eagle was given a rabbit for food in its cage at the Beizhamen Bird Market, Zhengzhou City, China. But, instead of eating the rabbit, it viewed the animal as a companion. The rabbit even grooms the eagle’s feathers.
The story is interesting, but I’m not sure why an eagle is being kept in a cage in the first place. I presume to be sold as a pet? If so, that doesn’t seem right.

Good news for all the rabbit owners living in northern Wales. Daleside Vets in Pandy is offering free dental checkups for rabbits during National Rabbit Week (January 21-27). Many rabbits, when not fed enough hay or given enough wood/cardboard to chew, suffer from elongated teeth. As rabbits’ teeth grow continuously throughout their lives, it is imperative they wear them down daily. Otherwise, teeth grow long and curl into the back of their mouths, inhibiting their intake of food.

I tried my hand at creating this knitted rabbit using FuzzyMitten’s pattern on Etsy.com. I discovered that my sewing skills weren’t really up to par, but it was fun anyway. Here was the result!

A team from Hiroshima University has concluded that the lunar maria (the dark balsaltic parts of the moon) that Asians say resemble a rabbit pounding rice cakes is actually 350 million years older than originally thought. Using an an upgraded instrument, the team was able to analyze particles five-thousandths of a millimeter from stones collected by the US Apollo program.

Well I liked the topic of rabbits as eco-friendly pets so much that I decided to do further research and write an article about it on My House Rabbit.
I thought of seven ways pet rabbits help contribute to a healthy environment. If anyone can think of more reasons, please let me know!

According to pet columnist Gina Spadafori, keeping rabbits as pets is more environmentally friendly than keeping cats and dogs. You can grow their food in a garden, and then you can throw the recycled paper litter and droppings into a compost pile to fertilize the garden. If you buy locally grown hay, you reduce the need for shipping food across the country, thereby cutting down on carbon emissions.
I also find that I hardly ever use my shredder anymore because Coco and Cosette tend to eat all my old receipts, etc. So that saves some electricity…

After treating four cases of myxomatosis, a Bristol, UK veterinary practice is urging rabbit owners to get their pets vaccinated against the illness. If unvaccinated, rabbits who contract the disease suffer immensely. Symptoms include runny eyes, which leads to conjunctivitis and blindness. Swelling and lumps also appear on the body. Most unvaccinated rabbits who contract the disease will perish.
Pet rabbits kept outdoors are more susceptible to the disease as they have a greater chance of coming in contact with wild rabbits/hares or insects such as fleas, mosquitos and mites carrying the disease.
