The Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund is launching a new campaign aimed at educating children about proper care of pet rabbits to be launched during Britain’s National Rabbit Week, January 21-27, 2008. The Jaffa Club, named after its founding rabbit, is a program for children aged 7-11, and will feature care sheets, videos cartoons, and a forum.

Twenty years ago, as a student at the Art Institute of Boston, Annette LeBlanc Cate wrote and illustrated a children’s book about a magician and his rabbit set in Harvard Square. But it wasn’t until this year that the story, The Magic Rabbit, went to print. Published by Candlewick Press (who also published Guess How Much I Love You), the book features black and white illustrations with accents of yellow.

Well I liked the topic of rabbits as eco-friendly pets so much that I decided to do further research and write an article about it on My House Rabbit.
I thought of seven ways pet rabbits help contribute to a healthy environment. If anyone can think of more reasons, please let me know!
An Atlanta, GA couple has created a new bunny cartoon called Baxter the Bunny based on their own English Angora rabbit, Buster. Ernie and Kim Martin teamed up with recent Auburn graduate and artist, Miles Davis to develop the characters. The cartoon, which can be found at www.baxterthebunny.com, features a new story every week.

According to pet columnist Gina Spadafori, keeping rabbits as pets is more environmentally friendly than keeping cats and dogs. You can grow their food in a garden, and then you can throw the recycled paper litter and droppings into a compost pile to fertilize the garden. If you buy locally grown hay, you reduce the need for shipping food across the country, thereby cutting down on carbon emissions.
I also find that I hardly ever use my shredder anymore because Coco and Cosette tend to eat all my old receipts, etc. So that saves some electricity…

After treating four cases of myxomatosis, a Bristol, UK veterinary practice is urging rabbit owners to get their pets vaccinated against the illness. If unvaccinated, rabbits who contract the disease suffer immensely. Symptoms include runny eyes, which leads to conjunctivitis and blindness. Swelling and lumps also appear on the body. Most unvaccinated rabbits who contract the disease will perish.
Pet rabbits kept outdoors are more susceptible to the disease as they have a greater chance of coming in contact with wild rabbits/hares or insects such as fleas, mosquitos and mites carrying the disease.

New to Disney’s Playhouse this November is a comedy featuring bunny puppets and 3 human characters called Bunnytown. The aim of the show is to get preschool children to laugh out loud. According to Adam Rudman, one of the show’s creators, “It’s non-stop action. It’s almost like you get to visit this place for the day and go all over the town. There are these crazy, silly bunnies — space bunnies, super bunnies, pirate bunnies. It really has unlimited potential.”

Bunnytown airs weekends at 11am (ET/PT).

A new float will dazzle spectators tomorrow morning at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The float will take the form of a 53-foot silver rabbit. It will appear in the “Blue Sky Gallery” which features other balloons fashioned from art. Below is a model of the new float.

The float is based on a 1986 stainless steel sculpture called “Rabbit” by acclaimed artist Jeff Koons. The original sculpture was a commentary on holiday consumerism- in particular, Easter. Koons played with perceptions of value by transforming a flimsy, cheap looking balloon bunny into a solid work of art admired by many in art museums. According the artist, the piece is about reflection. “It reflects the needs of culture and society and can represent so many different things to the viewer.”

According to a new survey conducted by veterinarians in Britain, 1 in 3 pet rabbits are obese. Sources of the problem include feeding bunnies sugary foods like toast with honey, carrots, and rich processed rabbit pellets.
On the plus side, the survey found an increasing number of pet rabbits living as house pets as opposed to living in an outdoor hutch.
