Photos of Coco & Cosette

Monday, February 4th, 2008

Here are some photos of the bunnies lounging today. Both have funny places where they like to sleep. For example, when they are not under the coffee table, Coco will lie down on a plastic pet food tray, and Cosette will rest near the elliptical trainer, sometimes under the pedal.

Adopt a Rescued Rabbit Month

Monday, February 4th, 2008

Two RabbitsThe House Rabbit Society and Petfinder.com have teamed up to designate February as Adopt a Rescued Rabbit Month!

According to Director of the Richmond House Rabbit Society Mary Cotter, “Promoting adoption and educating potential adopters early in the year helps to prevent the impulse purchase of bunnies a month or two later at Easter time. This, in turn, will reduce the number of rabbits relinquished to shelters.”

So, if you’re thinking about bringing a new pet into your home, you can read all about rabbit care and behavior at the My House Rabbit website, and you can read our article on the Benefits of Adopting a Rabbit.

We also have a good list of rabbit rescues and shelters on our Rabbit Resource Page.

Heartwarming Christmas Story

Tuesday, January 1st, 2008

Scout leaders in England discovered an abandoned pet rabbit in the scout hut yard on December 28. A note had been stuffed in the gate dated December 25. It read: “I’m not wanted any more, please look after me.” This tale has a happy ending however. Andrea Bisacre, the sister of one of the scout leaders, fell in love with the rabbit, adopted her, and named her Alice.

Feral Rabbits Overrunning Canadian City

Friday, December 7th, 2007

Domestic rabbit running wildI found this news story particularly disturbing. Apparently, in Kelowna, British Columbia, pet rabbits that have been abandoned are now breeding and living in people’s yards. Many homeowners are upset about damage done to their property and would like the rabbits culled. Relief is widespread in knowing that many of the rabbits will not survive the winter.

There is a lot of debate as to who should handle the feral rabbit population – individual homeowners or the city. Parks manager Joe Creron maintains that it should be left to individuals. “I think the [property owner] goes to a pest company, the pest company will help trap them. It’s no different than mice,” Creron said. “We all have a responsibility here, and the government can’t do everything for everyone on their private property.”

Near side of the moonA team from Hiroshima University has concluded that the lunar maria (the dark balsaltic parts of the moon) that Asians say resemble a rabbit pounding rice cakes is actually 350 million years older than originally thought. Using an an upgraded instrument, the team was able to analyze particles five-thousandths of a millimeter from stones collected by the US Apollo program.
